Summary
I have nearly 20 years experience in social scientific survey and qualitative research and analysis.
From 2008 to present, I have served as a research associate with PolictyInteractive, a non-profit research organization located in Eugene, Oregon, conducting in-depth, face-to-face qualitative interviews, analysis and writing on climate change and public policy in Oregon.
At the University of Oregon, I served as adjunct instructor in the Department of Sociology (1998-2002) and in the UO’s Central Oregon Programs in Bend (2010) teaching sociology of religion and environmental sociology; academic adviser in the UO’s Office of Academic Advising (2000-01), and as lead worker and staff interviewer in the UO’s Oregon Survey Research Laboratory (2002-05).
In 2012, I served as a Field Interviewer for the National Public Life Survey sponsored by the University of Michigan and Stanford University, funded by the National Science Foundation and administered by Abt SRBI, a national research organization. In 2010, I served as a Field Interviewer for the National Opinion Research Center on a U.S. Department of Energy Residential Energy Consumption Survey. From 2005 to 2008, I served as Supervisor and Interviewer at Northwest Survey & Data Services in Eugene.
In my Emory University (Atlanta, GA) doctoral dissertation, utilizing empirical methods of in-depth interviews, participant observation and social and ethical analysis of public documents, I join interpretive sociology and descriptive ethics to identify the crucial moral and cultural ideals that inform citizens’ views of the role of the forests in Oregon. I relate these ideals to the institutional and social situations of key constituencies at odds over the forests.
I published a lead article, drawn from my dissertation, in the British peer-reviewed journal, Worldviews. I have another article drawn from my dissertation under review at the Oregon Historical Quarterly. I have published several newspaper op-eds on a range of issues including race, education, religion and politics in the U.S., and ecological politics as well.
A native of Eugene, I graduated from the University of Oregon and hold advanced degrees from the University of California, Santa Barbara and Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia where I earned a Ph.D. in Ethics and Society centering on the sociology of religion, morality and culture. I have one son, Phineas, and one grandson, Enzo.
