Jesper Aagaard Petersen
Associate Professor of Social Sciences
Norwegian University of Science and Technology
Summary
Although I was born in Denmark, I am living in Norway with my partner and two daughters. I handed in my dissertation on modern Satanism in 2011 and was subsequently tenured at the Programme for Teacher Education, an independent department within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology Studies.
My primary academic interest is what is popularly called "the alternative scene", "New Age" and "occultism", namely detraditionalized and syncretistic religion in the contemporary West, particularly small informal groups and individual seekers within a larger "cultic milieu" of "occulture". Within this broad field, my area of expertise lies in modern Satanism and Western Esotericism, but I am well acquainted with studies of New Age, Neo-paganism, religion and popular culture, religion and science, UFO-religions and methodological and theoretical aspects in the Science of Religion.
At the moment, I am working on three interrelated projects: One on non-religion and secularity studies, one on religion and transgression and one on secular apocalypses. In addition, I teach courses on methodology, education strategies and contemporary religion in the west.
