Dr. Cary McDonald, Ph.D. Associate Professor and Head, Department of Recreation, Sport and Tourism, University of Illinois. Cary McDonald received a Ph.D. in forestry with a specialization in recreation resource management from the University of Minnesota in 1985.  He also holds forestry degrees from Purdue University and the University of Tennessee.  Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Illinois in 1994, he taught at Washington State University and Clemson University.  His research interests focus on the human dimensions of natural environments and nature-based tourism.  Much of his research deals with the application of social science principles for understanding and addressing relevant management, planning, and policy issues in these areas.  He has published over 100 research articles, research reports, and abstracts and has made over 30 research presentations at local, state and national conferences.  He has received over two million dollars to support his research efforts.  He has served as an associate editor for the major journals in the field including Journal of Leisure Research, Leisure Sciences, Journal of Park and Recreation Administration, and Society and Natural Resources.  Dr. McDonald was elected as a Senior Fellow to the American Leisure Academy in 2008.  His administrative experience in the department includes the role of Associate Head for Academic Affairs and Interim Head prior to his appointment as Head in 2001.
