Associate Professor, Humanities (Philosophy and Religious Studies)
Florida State University - Panama
Summary
The main focus of my research is to establish the proper role of logic within religious thought.
So, my research involves bringing together two fields - the study of religious thought, and the study of logic.
I believe that any work in philosophy of religion should be grounded in a historical understanding of religions. I also think that the most exciting new tools for the study of religious history are provided by scientific studies of human nature.
In my doctoral thesis, I considered how Michael Dummett's work on realism and anti-realism could be applied to the study of theistic language. Dummett is particularly concerned with the principle of bivalence. I have since become more interested in debates about the principle of non-contradiction, particularly in the work of Graham Priest. Also, any account of the role of logic in religious thinking must be based on some general theory about the role of logic, and I think that Robert Brandom's work provides the most important current contribution to this field.
