ADVANCE was initiated at the National Science Foundation in 2001 in an effort "to develop systemic approaches to increase the representation and advancement of women in academic science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers, thereby contributing to the development of a more diverse science and engineering workforce. ADVANCE focuses on ensuring that women faculty with earned STEM degrees consider academia as a viable and attractive career option."

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has invested more than $130M over the past decade to explore barriers and bridges to recruitment, retention, and advancement of STEM women. This group will provide opportunity to discuss research, promising practices and experiences in the academy. Attention will also focus on intersectionalities of identify (e.g., women from historically disadvantaged groups (e.g.,, African-American, Hispanic-American, Native-American); lesbian women; academic mothers; international women....).
