Abstract

The book Benetton: The Colours of Success explores the forty-years-long history of an apparel business that was able to grow from an artisanal dimension up to the scale of a multinational enterprise, by using a network approach both to supply and distribution. In the four sections of the book, the author takes into exam the institutional evolution of the company, its approach to the competitive environment, the point of view of the entrepreneurs, managers, workers, suppliers and shopkeepers involved into its activity, and the crucial role of technological and organizational innovation. The reconstruction of these aspects is conducted by means of many different sources, from business budgets to notarial deeds, from catalogs to consulting reports, from union documents to business research papers of the time, drawing scenarios that rarely became real.
