Wendell W. Ottley, Ill, was born and raised in Queens, New York. He is a student at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, and has been a member of the Carolina African- American Writers' Collective since 1996.

(Yankee Stadium -July, 1978)

two 4s on his back caged by pinstripes his infectious charisma escaping in mists thousands afflicted they stand, stomp, salivate & chant his name their energy absorbed by the afro tuft protruding from his black-blue helmet he glares

the petrified pitcher positions fingers swallows electric air

exhales

fires the first pitch hoping for a strike but that ball still rides the waves of a South Bronx cheer
